Beginning July 8, Madison County residents can stop by the Madison County Health Department between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pick up a free water-soluble BONIDE Mosquito Beater WSP pouch (dunk). Using mosquito dunks around your home and yard may help control mosquito larvae in contained standing water and lower mosquito populations.
Mosquito dunks are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
The limit is one package per household; call ahead for availability at 315.366.2526.
“Mosquitos are definitely unwanted outdoor pests this time of year, and they can also spread viruses to people and some animals,” said Madison County’s Environmental Health Director Geoffrey Snyder. “Taking steps to control mosquito populations around the home and yard will help improve your outdoor enjoyment this summer.”
The mosquito dunks are designed for outdoor use in contained standing water where mosquitos breed. Residents receiving the packets must follow all label directions.
The following steps also help control mosquito populations:
- Remove containers that hold and collect water in your yard
- Remove used tires, which act as mosquito-breeding sites
- Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that are kept outdoors
- Clean roof gutters to improve draining
- Remove leaf debris from yards and gardens
- Turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use
- Change the water in birdbaths twice weekly
- Clean vegetation and debris from edges of ponds
- Keep swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs clean and chlorinated
- Drain water from pool covers
- Landscape to promote good drainage and eliminate standing water that collects on your property
