Hot and humid weather is on its way for this weekend. Madison County is expected to reach temperatures in the upper 90s, with the maximum heat index reaching between 100 and 109. Extreme heat can be dangerous; the Madison County Office of Emergency Management wants residents to know what they can do to remain safe.

According to the National Weather Service, heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses. During hot and humid weather, your body’s ability to cool itself is challenged.

Remember to:

  • Find air conditioning
  • Avoid strenuous activities
  • Wear light clothing
  • Check on family members and neighbors
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Watch for signs of heat cramps, exhaustion or stroke
  • Never leave children or pets in a vehicle

“When your body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, you may experience a heat-related illness,” says John M. Barattini, EMS Coordinator Madison County Emergency Management. “Be mindful of the symptoms of heat exhaustion or stroke, if you or someone you are with are experiencing these symptoms, move to an air conditioned space; drink plenty of fluids and assist cooling with ice or cool water, and call 911. Heat stroke can be life threatening.”

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:

  • Faint or Dizzy
  • Excessive sweating
  • Rapid, weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Cool, pale, clammy skin
  • Muscle cramps

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:

  • Throbbing headache
  • May lose consciousness
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Body temperature above 103 degrees
  • Red, hot, dry skin
  • No sweating
