Congressman blasts Washington for spending problem, calls for bipartisan, responsible solution

Following the House of Representatives vote to raise the debt ceiling, add nearly $1.7 trillion to the national debt and increase spending to near-record levels, Congressman Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) issued the following statement:

“Swiping America’s credit card, mortgaging our kids’ and grandkids’ futures and enabling out-of-control spending seems to be one thing that unites Washington politicians. Enough is enough. I voted ‘no’ on this plan because it is not a real solution. Both parties are responsible for getting us into this fiscal mess, and we cannot continue to kick the can down the road – waiting until the next deadline to scramble together another ‘Band-Aid’ solution. Upstate New Yorkers are sick and tired of Washington wasting their hard-earned tax dollars. We are on a dangerous, unsustainable path, and Congress needs to do the hard work to rein in spending and responsibly tackle our debt.”

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-partisan, independent organization, declared this budget deal “may be the worst in history.” According to the CRFB, the budget deal could cost as much as the un-paid-for tax cuts from 2017. The first bill Brindisi co-sponsored as a member of Congress was the No Budget No Pay Act (H.R. 129) to stop members of Congress from being paid if they don’t pass a budget and appropriations bills on time.

The House voted to raise the debt ceiling, add nearly $1.7 trillion to the national debt, and increase spending to near record levels by a vote of 284-189.

Brindisi voted no.
