Assemblyman Brian Miller (R,I,C,Ref-New Hartford) recently honored New Hartford Eagle Scout Gage Kilborne; the young man was awarded the Boy Scouts of America’s Heroism Award by the National Court of Honor for actions that saved the lives of his mother and himself.

Nationally, an average of 68 scouts are given a heroism award annually.

“This young man represents exactly what our country needs more of in today’s world – a selfless, brave individual who is community minded and achieving goals,” Miller said. “His bravery and presence of mind saved his own life as well as his mother’s. It is truly impressive and worth celebrating.”

Kilborne was honored with the award for taking actions after his mother suffered a grand mal seizure while driving. He took control of the car and steered it safely off the road to avoid other motorists, personal property and a potentially fatal accident. After bringing the car to safety, he administered first aid and sought the help of a nearby resident in contacting 911. He remained composed until first responders arrived and took over.
