We want to hear from you: Community health assessment meetings

What sort of challenges face your community? What changes do you think would help the community become healthier? Madison County wants to hear from you.

Every three years, the Madison County Department of Health partners with Oneida Healthcare and Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton to identify and address local health priorities through a Community Health Assessment. During this assessment, the Health Department gathers information from its community partners, other health organizations, and members of the public.

The Madison County Department of Health is looking for community input by hosting a series of small group discussions of about 12 Madison County residents around the county. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. Walk-ins are welcome. There are eight sessions across the county:

  • Brookfield. Tuesday, Aug. 27, noon to 1:30 p.m., First Baptist Church, 2416 Beaver Creek Road, Brookfield
  • Canastota. Thursday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Office for the Aging, 138 Dominic Bruno Blvd., Canastota
  • Cazenovia. Thursday, Aug. 29, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cazenovia Public Library, 100 Albany St., Cazenovia
  • Chittenango. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Clear Path for Veterans, 1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango
  • DeRuyter. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 6:30 to 8 p.m. United Church of DeRuyter Parish House, 1632 Cortland St., DeRuyter
  • Hamilton. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Hamilton Public Library, 13 Broad St., Hamilton
  • Morrisville. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cornell Cooperative Extension, 100 Eaton St., Morrisville
  • Oneida. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Karing Kitchen, 116 West Grove St., Oneida

The end result is a Community Health Improvement Plan. This plan is used to set priorities for future initiatives and strategies for the community. The results will guide the work the Health Department and its partners do over the next few years to improve the overall health of Madison County.

Madison County Sheriff sends local kids to summer camp

Madison County Sheriff Todd M. Hood is sending 16 deserving children to the state Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp. Children from Madison County left Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019, for their week of wholesome summer fun. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is located on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of Yates County.

Now in its 43rd year of operation, the camp will accommodate more than 900 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 from across New York state this summer. The campers attend at no charge.

Made possible by the generous financial support of the Honorary Members of the Sheriffs’ Institute, the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp provides a solid recreational program while stressing basic values and good citizenship.

“The campers get an insider’s look at the world of law enforcement,” said Hood. “By working with and learning from the sheriffs and deputy sheriffs at the camp, the kids develop a deeper respect for and understanding of the men and women who enforce our laws.”

Campers participate in typical camp activities, like archery, sailing, boating, hiking and talent shows. They also experience technical and safety demonstrations by deputy sheriffs such as scuba diving, K-9 handling, bicycle safety and boating safety.

The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is a program of the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute, Inc. The Sheriffs’ Institute was established in 1979 with the mission to assist the office of the sheriff in advancing education in the criminal justice community, preventing juvenile delinquency, and supporting victims of crime and their families.
