Brindisi: This funding will help keep first responders safe on the job

Congressman Anthony Brindisi announced nearly $500,000 in Assistance to Firefighters Grants for Upstate New York fire departments. The Department of Homeland Security grant program helps supplement state and local budgets to ensure first responders and emergency service workers have the resources they need.

“Our brave firefighters know the risks, yet they put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe,” Brindisi said. “It is important they have access to the right equipment, gear, and training to keep them safe on the job.”

The AFG program is used by fire departments across the country to maintain the number of trained, “front line” firefighters and purchase vehicles, protective gear, equipment, and training programs to better serve the community. Earlier this year, Brindisi pushed the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund AFG programs at $405 million. The Fiscal Year 2020 House Homeland Security Appropriations bill included a $50 million increase in firefighter grants over Fiscal Year 2019.

Brindisi announced operations and safety grants for the following fire departments:

  • Cincinnatus VFD, $66,761.90
  • Morrisville FD, $124,000
  • Prospect Terrace Fire Company, $100,380.95
  • Forestport FD, $199,047.61
