Providing assistance for a total of 19 people

The American Red Cross is assisting a total of 19 residents from nine apartments impacted by a fire Sunday morning on Cayuga Street in Fulton. A team of eight Disaster Action Team volunteers responded to the incident. The First United Methodist Church located nearby provided space for impacted residents to gather for comfort, food and refreshments and support.

Red Cross assistance typically includes funding for temporary housing, food and clothing, health services as needed, and specially-trained Disaster Mental Health volunteers are available to help those affected deal with the emotional aspect of their disaster. Affected families will meet with caseworkers in the coming days to work on a long-term recovery plan.

In a typical year, home fires kill more people in the United States than all natural disasters combined. The Red Cross encourages everyone to take two steps to help keep their families safe: Test your smoke alarms every month and practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year.
