Assemblyman Brian Miller (R,I,C,Ref-New Hartford) joined Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C,I-Pulaski) and members of the Assembly Minority Conference, law enforcement officials and the families of New Yorkers who had allegedly been victimized at the hands of someone released due to the recent bail reforms at a press conference in Albany today calling for an immediate repeal of the new statutes.
“It is heartbreaking to stand here today with the families of two New Yorkers who have been killed, hurt and victimized because of the dangerous new bail reforms,” said Miller. “New Yorkers are understandably outraged because these crimes could have been prevented if judges were allowed to have discretion in setting bail. Instead, Albany felt it knew better and passed this irresponsible measure. Now lives are being lost. We must immediately repeal these reforms and prevent dangerous, violent criminals from being allowed back in our community.”
Joining Miller and his colleagues today were the families of Maria “Rosie” Osai and Sarah Tombs, two New Yorkers who were killed in separate incidents by individuals who were released due to the new bail “reforms.” A 35-year-old mother from Stony Point, Osai was struck and killed on Christmas Eve by an unlicensed, hit-and-run driver who was released without bail. Another young mother from Syracuse, Tombs was shot and killed in April, allegedly by her boyfriend, who was released last week.
Tombs was only 22 years old when she was killed in the apartment she shared with her boyfriend and her 4-year-old daughter.
