Cozy Café series continues
In January, the Cazenovia Public Library brought back the popular “Warming up to Winter” program series for its second year in a row.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the three-month series is designed to enrich the season with engaging activities, presentations and films for all ages.
Central to the annual program series is the “Cozy Café” — a weekly celebration of “hygge.”
A key aspect of Danish culture, hygge (pronounced “hue-guh”) is a concept characterized by a state of coziness, comfort and contentment.
Held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the library’s original building, Cozy Café sessions feature casual hands-on crafts and activities, hot beverages, cookies and conversation in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Feb. 19, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute docent Anne Redfern will lead “VTS Art Study.”
The group will examine pieces from the library’s art collection using Visual Thinking Strategies – a learner-centered instructional method used to examine and find meaning in visual art. As facilitator, Redfern will ask participants to respond to a set of questions while examining the artwork.
On Feb. 26, Susan Green will present “Pysanka”, Ukrainian eggs.
Participants will create Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated with traditional folk motifs and designs using a wax-resist method.
All materials will be provided.

Library to present winter break “Explorer Days”
Looking for kid-friendly activities over the school break? Head to the Cazenovia Public Library for four fun and educational events.
Craft & Movie on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Children ages 7 and up are invited to the Community Room to watch an animated/live-action film loosely based on a true story about a dog who helped save children infected by the diphtheria epidemic in the 1925 serum run to Nome. The movie is rated G and runs 78 minutes. Following the movie, participants will create snow goggles and an Alaskan scene.
Science of Sled Dogs on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m.
Children ages 7 and up will participate in sled-dog focused activities in the Community Room before video-chatting with a Denali National Park ranger, who will discuss the sled dogs that live in the national park and answer questions.
Pasta Making on Friday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m.
The library is partnering with Community Resources for Independent Seniors (CRIS) to present a pasta-making workshop in the Parish Hall at St. Peter’s Church. Children ages 8-12 will learn to make pasta and share lunch with senior community members. Registration is requested.
Library to host quilt trunk show and book talk
The Cazenovia Public Library will welcome CNY author and prize-winning quilter Thomas Knauer to the Community Room on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. for an exploration into quilts and the stories they tell.
In his latest book, “Why We Quilt,” Knauer highlights a wide range of contemporary quilt makers, sharing images of their creations and insight into what inspires them to continue quilting.
During the presentation, Knauer will read from his book and showcase some of his quilts.
This program is presented as part of the library’s “Warming up to Winter” program series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Library continues winter program series with “Creating on the Grid” art workshop
The Cazenovia Public Library will continue its Warming up to Winter program series on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 10:30 a.m. with “Creating on the Grid” — an adult workshop led by Sarah Tietje-Mietz, director of Hilltop House & Studio at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park (SQHAP).
A classically trained artist, Tietje-Mietz studied traditional forms of printmaking and painting at The Art Institute of Boston (now part of Lesley University).
Her work — which has been shown at SQHAP, the Gear Factory in Syracuse and on the Cazenovia Art Trail — is heavily influenced by landscapes, cityscapes and architecture. She is particularly interested in capturing the ways in which the world changes as night falls.
Tietje-Mietz paints from printed photographs. To capture an image, she begins by priming and drawing a grid over her canvas. Using a different color for each square, she begins filling in the painting, starting in larger areas and gradually becoming more detailed.
During the workshop, participants will learn about the artist’s creative process and create their own artwork using the grid approach.
All materials will be provided.
