Members of the public are invited to meet contemporary representational artist Angela Marken at a reception at Herkimer College.

Marken’s Looking Glass exhibit is on display in the College’s Cogar Gallery in the Robert McLaughlin College Center; the series explores figurative narrative scenes, portraiture and landscapes through oil paintings and charcoal drawings that focus on the inner world, contemplation and our relationship with nature.

“The narrative images and landscapes that I create are based on a combination of experiences and imaginings,” Marken said. “Imagery of dense forests, weaving cloud formations and vast lakes are prominent throughout my work and are directly influenced by my surroundings growing up in Upstate New York and Upper Peninsula Michigan.”

Marken received her M.F.A. in painting from Laguna College of Art and Design and her B.F.A. from SUNY Potsdam. While she lives in upstate New York, Marken often showcases her work in New York and Los Angeles.

Looking Glass will be on display through March 27. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the Cogar Gallery. The gallery is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the College is open. For more information, visit herkimer.edu/cogar.
