On June 17, 2020, Jamaal Jackson, 25, of Utica, was shot and killed on the 1200 block of Brinckerhoff Avenue.

Police say Zaharae Wright, 20, of Utica, has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in relation to this shooting.

Wright also faces additional charges following a pursuit he was involved in while riding on an illegal minibike. After officers attempted to stop Wright, he led them on a lengthy pursuit, ultimately ending in the Hannaford Plaza on Mohawk Street.

After officers were able to stop and attempt to arrest Wright, he began resisting and fought with the officers on scene until he was placed into custody. Following his arrest, Wright was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun.

In this case, Wright was charged with multiple state vehicle and traffic law violations, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing governmental administration.

Police say Wright likely faces additional charges and more arrests are expected in the homicide of Jackson.
