Madison County Planning Department is excited to hear that the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum has been selected as a launch point for the new Canal Staycations activity program developed by the New York State Canal Corporation.

Designed to provide an opportunity for people to get outside while still practicing social distancing, the program is a great way to explore the state Canal system and Empire State Trail.

From the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum Staycation hub, which is located right along the canal and trail, families, couples and individuals have the option to reserve free use of kayaks or bikes.

The free self-guided excursions will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 17 through Sept. 7, 2020, Fridays through Mondays. Reservations for bikes or kayaks must be made in advance by calling Chittenango Landing at 315.687.3801.

“The Erie Canal and Empire State Trail are both connected right to our site making the Chittenango Canal Boat Museum a great launching point for a biking or paddling adventure,” said CLCBM Executive Director Joe Treglia. “Paddlers of all experience levels will enjoy the calm, flat water of the canal while seeing wildlife, exploring sunken canal boats and floating through stone arch aqueducts. Similarly, those seeking to bike the trail will enjoy the scenic, flat and off-road path that is the same path that mules once used to pull the canal boats.”

Visitors are also encouraged to explore the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum site, which features the only remaining three-bay drydock and boatyard from the original Erie Canal. Blacksmiths will be demonstrating on site between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday through Monday, based on availability (call or check website for current schedule). Food, beverages and gift items will be available on site.
