Opportunity Shop Needs Volunteers

(Canastota, NY – Oct. 2011) The purpose of the Opportunity Shop located at 128 E. Center St., Canastota, is to provide low-income families with good, serviceable clothing at a minimum cost. Household goods and furniture in limited amounts are also available.

Though intended primarily for low-income families, more working families are coming to the thrift shop because the items are more affordable, and the shop is more convenient than going to the malls. The clothing offered in the shop is donated.

Fire and other emergency victims are provided with clothing, bedding, furniture and household items at no cost. The shop is run by volunteers under the guidance of the Canastota Committee for Human Development.

The board is responsible for setting goals, approving new programs, authorizing large or unusual expenditures and supporting ongoing relief to the needy.

The Opportunity Shop is open to the public 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Volunteers are needed to help in the shop and at the adjoining food pantry. Most volunteers work in two- to four-hour shifts.

With the winter months approaching, new volunteers are needed when some ‘snow bird’ volunteers go away for the winter. Anyone wishing to help out at the Opportunity Shop may call (315) 697-3140 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
