Joe Wilson Named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week
By Matt Faulkner, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications
(Albany, Jan. 3, 2012) After a huge weekend against Cornell with two goals and two assists for four points, Joe Wilson was selected as the ECAC Hockey Rookie of Week on Tuesday.
Wilson had his best weekend of the year with four points on two goals and two assists. He tallied the gamewinner late in the first period in a 2-1 win at Cornell and then started a four-goal period with a breakaway goal earlier in the third period to propel the Raiders to a 5-3 win and its first sweep over Cornell since 2003-04. His game-winner was a one-timer from the slot, while his second of the weekend was a stick check and steal on a forecheck and then beat Cornell’s Andy Iles on a breakaway. He finished with a plus-3 on the weekend.
The North Syracuse, N.Y., native ranks ninth among rookies in the conference with 13 points on seven goals and six helpers. His seven scores are third among first-year skaters. The rookie is riding a four-game point streak with six points in the four games. Three of the six points have come as goals and one was a gamewinner.
Wilson and the Raiders will be back on the road this weekend with visits to Union and Rensselaer. Colgate will be facing the Engineers and Dutchmen for the first time since eliminating both schools in last year’s ECAC Hockey playoffs.
Oakes Named PL Player of the Week
By Jeremiah Hergott, Director of Athletic Communications
(Center Valley, Pa. – Jan. 30, 2012) Colgate senior Tricia Oakes was named the Patriot League Anaconda Player of the Week following her performance against Lafayette and Holy Cross. This is the second time Oakes has received this honor and is the fifth weekly award for the Raiders this season.
Oakes exploded for quite possibly the finest week of her career, as she averaged 21.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game during a 1-1 stretch for Colgate. She collected a career-high 25 points and 17 rebounds in Saturday’s 74-69 win over Holy Cross, snapping a 10-game skid against the Crusaders and giving the Raiders just their fourth victory in 47 meetings between the two.
She opened the week with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in Wednesday’s 66-58 loss at Lafayette. Oakes now has four double-doubles on the season and became just the fifth Raider ever to score more than 800 points and secure over 500 rebounds in a career.
Colgate will head to the Nation’s Capital to face American on Saturday, Feb 4. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.
