Canastota Public Library news

By Elizabeth Totten

(Canastota, NY – March 2012) Historically, March was considered to be the beginning of the Roman ‘work year.’  In thinking about that, I am wondering if it isn’t too late to think of March as a new beginning for us.  Surely spring is right around the bend and we’ll soon see the trees begin to bud and the green of flowers reach through the earth to extend their leaves to the sun.

So I am considering March, a first of the year for me, as well.  And, at the library, there are always ways to reinvent oneself.  In addition to our books, magazines, and videos, we have some great programs planned for the month of March.  Many of these are programs that we can use to learn something new about art, about ourselves, about our community.

During March, there will be an art exhibit at the Canastota Library of the works of Stephen Perrone (acrylics) and Ralph Martell (photography).  While Martell takes you along on his journeys throughout the world, Perrone will take you to the far reaches of his mind.  An artist’s reception will be held on March 6 at 7 p.m. in the Canastota Library’s Lawson Community Room.  The art exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Since March is Women’s History Month, Liz Metzger and Tish Dickinson will present “From Quill to Blog.”  The duo will explore the viewpoints of women expressed in their writing over the past millennium.  From Abelard’s Heloise and the extraordinary Hildegard of Bingen, through the reigns of Elizabeth I and Victoria, to pioneer women and those who lived through the Civil War and World War II, women share insights that are as surprising as they are profound.  The presentation is one of the Canalside Talks for 2011 and will be held on Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

Computer Classes are still being held at the library during March.  Classes will be held on each day from 10 a.m. to noon and the same subject will be discussed again from 2 to 4 p.m. in the afternoon.  Reservations are recommended.  The classes are as follows

Tuesday, March 13           How to Download EBooks & Audiobooks

Thursday, March 15         Job Search Skills, Part 2
