Morrisville State Softball Splits with Hamilton

(Morrisville, NY – March 28, 2012) After dropping a 5-1 decision in the first of the double header, Morrisville State softball rebounded in the night cap, topping visiting Hamilton College 8-6 Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville.
The Mustangs improve to 4-2 overall, as Hamilton returns with a 5-7 overall record.
Morrisville State tallied just three hits in the contest, two from Nicole Duchene (Oneida, N.Y.) who went 2-for-3 from the plate, and one from Cassandra Smith (Lansing, N.Y.) who recorded a double and an RBI in three at bats.
Jenna D’Ercole (Highland, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, throwing seven innings and allowing nine hits and five earned runs while tallying nine strike outs.
Ashley Perritt led the Continentals from the plate, hitting 3-of-4 including a double and recording an RBI, while Sam Miller went 2-for-3, posting three RBI’s while posting a home run in the top of the first inning.
Hamilton took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Katie Puccio hit a double to drive in one, and Miller followed with a homer for two additional runs.
Miller then singled in the top of the third, driving in another for the four run cushion, before Perritt singled in the top of the seventh inning, adding to the Hamilton lead with an RBI.
Morrisville’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Smith hit a double to drive in Duchene.
In the night cap, Hamilton jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Morrisville State rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third to claim the 8-6 advantage and eventual victory.
Four Mustangs went 2-for-3 from the plate, including Maranda Owens (Brookfield, N.Y.) and Duchene who each posted two RBI’s.
D’Ercole recorded the win on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing 10 hits, five earned runs, and posting four strikeouts.
After a double from Samantha Porter (Newfield, N.Y.) to drive in one, Duchene hit a double in the bottom of the third as two base runners crossed the plate, and Gabby Gallart (Montgovery Village, Md.) added another RBI on a single to give Morrisville State the 8-6 lead.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to SUNY IT to open North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action.
Morrisville State men’s lacrosse defeats Vassar College, 8-7

(Morrisville, NY – March 28, 2012) The Morrisville State College men’s lacrosse team beat host Vassar College Wednesday night, 8-7.
The Mustangs are now 3-3 overall while Vassar drops to 2-5.
Jack Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with four goals while Jeremy Beresovoy (Jamesville, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and Nick Farruggio (Lafayette, N.Y.) had the last goal for Morrisville. Andrew Stein (Oswego, N.Y.) grabbed seven groundballs in the game while Michael Hinchey (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) had seven saves between the pipes.
Vassar was led by Max Herman scored three goals while Matthew Pearce, Jareyong Ko, Ryan McCarthy and Chris Toffoli each had a goal apiece. Pearce and Andrew Nicol each grabbed three groundballs, while Nicol also had nine saves in net.
Vassar College scored five unanswered goals in the last three minutes of play to end the game. Morrisville edged the game in ground balls 31 -24 and also in shots on goal 17-14.
The Mustangs return to the field Saturday at Keuka College at 3:30 p.m.
