National Trails Day: Recreational Hike planned
(Cazenovia, NY) “Learn About Beaver” is sponsored by the CNY Chapter of the North Country Trail Association/ Link Trail and will take place Saturday June 2 from 10 a.m. to noon on the Madison County Link Trail south of Damon Road in the Tioughnioga Wildlife Management Area (south of Cazenovia).
Participants are asked to meet at the large parking area near the Link Trail crossing on Damon Road. Everyone is invited and there is no cost.
The hike is a short hike (less than a half -mile with a mild hill climb and descent) to an area of extensive beaver dam activity. Learn about the beavers, their habitat, and how they are changing this environment.
Hikes should wear long pants and footwear suitable for trail hiking (may be wet near the dams), and bring water, insect repellent, camera and binoculars. (Note: there may be some bird watching/identification on the way in).
Guest field instructor is Dr. Dietland Muller-Schwarze, Professor Emeritus at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Muller-Schwarze’s areas of expertise include animal behavior, behavioral ecology, vertebrate communication (pheromones), and chemical ecology. In addition to numerous papers published on the topic of beavers, he is the author of “The Beaver: Natural History of a Wetlands Engineer.”
