First Ever ‘Silver Scorcher’ 5K/10K to Benefit Sherrill Kenwood Park Fund

(Sherrill, N.Y., May 22, 2012) Registration is officially open for the first annual Silver Scorcher 5K/10K race, being held in conjunction with the Sherrill Kenwood Park Festival, created several years ago to raise funds for community park projects. The race will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11 and funds raised will pay for the run and for community park infrastructure projects.

The race will start and finish at the Community Activity Center (CAC) located at 139 East Hamilton Ave. in Sherrill  and pass through the scenic neighborhoods of Kenwood and Sherrill. Participants will run a course that winds past the historic Mansion House, the Oneida Community Golf Course, and Robertson Park—the park that was created as part of the initial Park Festival four years ago. Water stops will be available along the 5K and 10K courses. An early race registration fee of $20 includes admission to the park festival (a $20 value) and a race t-shirt. In addition, a cash prize will be awarded to the top male and female racers. For racers who register after July 28 or the same day as the race, the registration fee increases to $30.

Race day registration and packet pick-up will occur from 7 to 9:30am at the CAC. The 5K race will begin promptly at 10am and the 10K will start at 10:10am. Professional timing will be provided by Leone Timing. Refreshments will be available to all runners immediately following the event. Also, of-age finishers will receive a complimentary pint of beer.

According to Dr. Patrick Costello, Festival Coordinator, the Silver Scorcher will greatly enhance an already popular, local event. “We have many runners and fitness-minded individuals in Sherrill and the Silver Scorcher is a celebration of both these people and the beautiful and historic scenery we all enjoy when running in our community. Adding a road race to the festival’s events was a natural fit. With live music and free admission into the popular festival, we think this is a race people will want to run again.”

As the main fundraiser for new playground and park projects, the Sherrill Kenwood Park Festival returns this year to the CAC lawns on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 11:30am – 10:30pm. The past few years’ efforts to raise money were highly successful, raising enough funds to complete the new playground at Robertson Park. By purchasing a festival ticket this year, participants will enjoy a concert featuring 11 bands plus a host of children’s entertainment and activities, which is new this year.

Local restaurants will offer various items and tastings and adult beverages will be available to all folks over 21. In addition, local merchants have donated thousands of dollars in prizes, including NFL, MLB, NCAA football and basketball tickets and memorabilia, fine jewelry, art, vacation and restaurant gift certificates and getaways. Money raised from this year’s festival will help build an outdoor amphitheater to host local music events and drama productions. Additional funds will be applied toward continuation of ongoing park enhancements and new projects.

“The most meaningful aspect of the race is how it spotlights the abilities of our remarkable local athletes,” said Joe Hatfield, race coordinator and running enthusiast. “Since the race will include runners of all ages and abilities, it showcases the determination and athleticism in our community. Several hundred participants and volunteers are expected to take part in race day events. “Community support is a key part of hosting running events like this,” said Hatfield. “We really appreciate the support received from local police and fire departments who have stepped up as volunteers to help coordinate race day activities.”
