Set of 15 Trail Maps Developed

(Wampsville, NY – June 2012) The Madison County Health Department in conjunction with Madison County Planning Department and Madison County Tourism plans to release a set of 15 maps of trails in Madison County.

The set of maps will also be available for download and accessible using smart phone technology,

The maps are designed to inform residents and visitors of the variety and types of trails available for walking, hiking, biking and running in the county.  The goal behind the project is to get more Madison County residents active and have them take advantage of all the trail networks right in their back yard and across the county.

At the same time, more trail usage could lead to more commerce in the nearby communities.

Jim Walter, executive director of Madison County Tourism, Inc., said Madison County has a lot of hidden gems when it comes to trails.

“Many of us have walked the Erie Canal Towpath or taken advantage of having the Link Trail in the community, but there are a lot of trails right in our back yard that people don’t even know about,” Walter said. “The Cazenovia Preservation Foundation maintains miles upon miles of trails in that part of the county, the Great Swamp Conservancy is always building more trails and, of course, the DEC maintains hundreds of miles of trails in the southern part of the county. There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to recreational trails.”

The new maps, funded by a grant from the Central New York Community Foundation, will be available at tourism kiosks, the county office building and at various organizations across the county by the middle of June.
