A Wild Mushroom Bonanza for CPF Hikers

(Cazenovia, NY – June 2012) Another successful Cazenovia Preservation Foundation Walks ‘n’ Talks on Wild Mushrooms took place June 9 at the Burlingame Road Trail.

William Chapman, science professor and wild foods expert, encouraged CPF visitors to hunt for mushrooms and fungi in the woods.  He presented a brief background on mushroom composition and functions then explained how to identify which mushroom are edible and which ones are not.

Amongst the hike, enthusiasts were treated to many different varieties along the trail and even some that weren’t expected to be found at the time. Chapman also identified some edible plants along the way and shared many of his “trade” secrets on when to harvest and how to prepare plants.

The month of July, CPF is sponsoring two different Interpretive Bike Routes through Cazenovia.  Each route will have several interpretive signs about the history of the location.
