To the Editor:

(Brookfield, NY – July 2012) The 173rd edition of the Madison County Fair enjoyed nearly perfect “Fair” weather for its four day run, July 12 through 15. Patrons and participants alike were entertained daily by the numerous free shows and family oriented activities taking place daily on the fairgrounds.

Several of the surrounding communities’ fire departments turned out to kick off the first night with a parade starting at the town park and ending up on the fairgrounds. Once on the grounds, the firefighters competed in a pushball contest. The Morris Fire Department claimed the grand prize of $175 for its efforts.

Friday afternoon, a number of current and retired dirt track champions turned out for the third annual Brookfield Speedway Driver’s Reunion. A few drivers even took commemorative laps around the track in their vintage racecars. The power pulling events kept the grandstand crowds entertained with the diesel trucks roaring into action Friday night, followed by the gas trucks Saturday morning and the tractors took to the track Sunday.

The events tent hosted numerous activities including music, poets and magic. The Madison County Youth Bureau overflowed the tent Saturday with activities for the youngsters. Meanwhile, the stage showcased live bands, the Miss & Mister Madison County Pageant and the Talent Show.

The demolition derby proved once again to be a “smashing” success, playing to a capacity crowd that sold out before the first engine roared to life. Anyone who missed the demolition or any of the power pulling events will get another chance when the Madison County Fairgrounds gears up for Wheel Days Sept. 28 through 30.

Fair officials are delighted to report that exhibitor entries nearly tripled from the previous year and would like to commend the department superintendents for their role in bringing about this substantial increase. The cattle department generated the greatest increase, hence accolades to superintendent Dewitt Head for his successful efforts.

The directors of the Madison County Fair would like to thank all of the volunteers, superintendents, sponsors, exhibitors, vendors and patrons; along with the Madison County Board of Supervisors, Madison County Courier, Madison County Tourism, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Madison County Youth Bureau and all of the County Offices that contributed to the success of the 173rd edition of the Fair.
