Canastota: From Village Hall

Board to pursue two local laws

By Margo Frink

(Canastota, NY – Aug. 2012) Trustee Bill Haddad explained to the Canastota Village Board at its regular meeting Aug. 6 that he had spoken with codes enforcement office Michael Adsit regarding placards located near abandoned buildings that identify hazards for the fire department.

Haddad said these placards are state mandated, unbudgeted items and are paid for through the codes department’s budget. They cost $26 each and many buildings could have up to four placards. Currently the village is in need of 15 placards.

Haddad said he wanted to explore a law that would require the homeowner to purchase any placards needed for the building.

Village Administrator Larry Carpenter said the village is also pursuing a fee for lawn mowing that would require the property owner to pay for the service if the village mows it. If the fee is not paid then unpaid balances would be added to property owner’s taxes.

He said Attorney Scott Chatfield is reviewing wording of a local law.

In Mayor Carla DeShaw’s absence, Deputy Mayor Scott Rapasadi read a summary of funds from the 2011 season provided by Canastota Pop Warner. Purchased were 114 jerseys, 62 pairs of pants and 20 youth girdles.

The board approved the closure of Canal Street from Souter to Main streets from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 26 for the Nirelli Cancer (motorcycle) Ride.
