Media Messages and Young People Workshop at Caz Library

Cazenovia Public Library news

(Cazenovia, NY – Sept. 2012) Do media messages really have that much power to influence our children? Those ads really are not influencing my child, are they?

These questions and others will be answered at a workshop entitled How Media Messages Impact Young People to be held in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Tina Louis, youth development specialist for the Madison County Youth Bureau, will review data and media examples to illustrate the impact of media on young minds. The workshop is a great activity for parents and grandparents, as well as anyone who is a youth caregiver or youth worker.

“Messages young people get from the media have a powerful influence over their behavior,” Louis said. “Media messages can have a significant influence on body image for girls and boys and can influence behaviors such as alcohol use and violence. It is important to be aware of what our youth are being exposed to and to communicate about what the messages are really saying to our young people.”

The workshop will include a review of research and of media examples to increase the audience’s comfort level with questioning the media, as well as resources available that can be used after the workshop.

How Media Messages Impact Young People is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Cazenovia Public Library at 315.655.9322 or visit cazenoviapubliclibrary.org. Information is also available at the Madison County Youth Bureau at madisoncounty.ny.gov/youth-bureau/home.
