Owens Congratulates Burton Street Elementary School on ‘National Blue Ribbon’ Recognition

(Washington, DC – Sept. 6, 2012) Today, the U. S. Secretary of Education will designate more than 300 public and private schools across the country as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools.  Congressman Bill Owens issued the following statement in response to the announcement that Burton Street Elementary School in Cazenovia is included in this designation.

“Today’s announcement is a testament to the good work being done in many New York schools,” said Owens in response to the news. “I congratulate the teachers, administrators, parents and students at Burton Street Elementary for their significant efforts to earn this award.”

Principal Mary-Ann Macintosh joined Congressman Owens in today’s announcement through the following statement:

“On behalf of the entire staff at Burton Street School it is our honor to receive such high recognition,” said Macintosh. “This is a reflection of the continuous efforts by the staff who come to school each day with a mission to not only improve student achievement but enhance the lives of our children.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, “the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools where students achieve at very high levels and/or where the achievement gap in narrowing. The program sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of achievement. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is part of a larger U. S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.” (Source: Department of Education Website)

As part of this program, principals and a select teacher from Blue Ribbon schools will be invited to Washington, DC for a recognition ceremony on November 12th and 13th.  Representatives from each school will receive a National Blue Ribbon Schools plaque and a flag to signify this status.
