(Town of Nelson, NY – Sept. 7, 2012) Madison County Sheriff’s were called to the scene of a man reported trapped under a tree at approximately 11 a.m. this morning that occurred behind 4188 Route 20 near the intersection of Larson Road. The accident scene was approximately one-eighth mile into the woods behind the residence at that location.
The victim, 22-year-old Matthew J. Stevens of Vernon Center was pronounced dead at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. He was transported by CAVAC Ambulance.
Stevens, along with three other individuals, was logging on private property – with permission – when Stevens attempted to pull down a tree, approximately 82 feet in height, with a chain attached to a tractor. When the tree was pulled, it fell on top of the tractor with Stevens sitting behind the wheel. The tree was in close proximity to another tree that interfered with it falling behind the tractor, and redirected its path over the tractor.
Morrisville Fire Department responded and assisted on the scene along with the New York State Police.
Stevens was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office in Syracuse for an autopsy.
