(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 2012) A local family is in need of your help. In August 2011, Terri Lanterman Becker was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Over time, people with ALS progressively lose the ability to function and care for themselves. ALS is a terminal disease that usually takes the lives of those diagnosed with the illness within 3 to 5 years.
Lanterman has been a lifelong youth advocate and active member of the community. She has affected countless lives in her 25 years of service with the 4-H of Madison County. The disease forced her to retire in April 2012.
Lanterman also served as the youth group leader at her church for several years.
The financial and emotional strain on her and her husband has been tremendous.
David, Lanterman’s husband of four years was forced to take early retirement in order to care for Terri’s daily needs. She requires daily physical therapy in order to maximize muscle function. She also requires the help of a home health aide to assist David in providing personal care.
As of July 2012 Lanterman’s insurance stopped paying for these services and the family has had to pay out of pocket. Due to mounting medical bills and household costs, the Lanterman’s are unable to pay for these crucial services.
In order to give back to a person that has given so much to our community, Lanterman’s family, friends and loved ones will be holding a benefit on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Morrisville Community Church, 3824 Swamp Road from 1 to 5 p.m.
A Chinese auction will be featured at the benefit.
Benefit organizers are asking for support from local businesses by making a donation of a gift certificate, gift card, or any item from their business.
Donation tickets are $10 each and children under 5 are free. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated by Terri and David.
