(Madison County, NY – Oct. 2012) Madison County and the Victims of Violence Program (VOV) join the statewide “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” campaign, which is spearheaded by the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV).
The campaign encourages public, private and non-profit entities to raise awareness of the issue by embracing the color purple – the symbolic hue for domestic violence awareness – by shining purple lights on buildings or other structures in their community, wearing purple or sponsoring awareness events. In 2011, more than 425 organizations and individuals across the state participated in the Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign.
All New Yorkers are being asked to wear purple on Oct. 17 to help generate discussion and awareness of domestic violence and dating abuse.
VOV invites everyone in Madison County to participate by shining your own lights or wearing purple. If interested in shining a purple light at your home, please contact VOV at 363-0048 for information on obtaining a purple light bulb. In addition the VOV Program would love any pictures for our Website to display any organization and/or individuals wearing purple or shining purple light.
