Madison Transit System Ride for Free Week Returns

(Madison County, NY – Oct. 2012) Ride the Madison Transit System for free! MTS is promoting “MTS Ride Free Week” again, which will run Monday, Oct. 15 to Friday, Oct. 19. During this week, people can simply hop on the bus – no pass or cash needed. The goal of the program is to educate more people about the bus system and to showcase the improved routes.

“Earlier this year, the Madison Transit System initiated some significant improvements and changes to better serve the residents of Madison County,” said Scott Ingmire, Madison County Planning Department director. “The effects of these changes have been monitored and analyzed and, with some very minor tweaking to schedules implemented Oct. 15, we believe we are now the most efficient, affordable and user-friendly rural transportation system that we can possibly be.”

MTS offers three fixed route buses: Bus 1 services the city of Oneida, with a lunch express mini-route available; Bus 2 services Chittenango, Canastota and Cazenovia; and Bus 3 services Hamilton, Morrisville, Munnsville, Madison and Earlville.

Transfer points link the routes together.

MTS operates Monday through Friday.

Once aboard during this promotion week, riders will get a copy of the transit guide and a free gift (while supplies last). Riders will also have the chance to win a one-month free pass just for riding, and photo contest information will be posted on each bus. Transit guides and more information about MTS service can also be found at ridemts.org.

During the first Ride Free Week in May 2012, more than 100 people took advantage of the bus service. The intent is to reach even more people this time.

“This is about creating transportation options,” Ingmire said. “We are hoping with ‘MTS Ride Free Week’ that people will give the bus a try. If we can get people to take that first ride and show them how convenient and easy it is, maybe for their next trip they will think Madison Transit.”

Bike racks have been installed on the transit buses for convenience to cyclists and to facilitate multi-modal trips. Bring your bike along for MTS Ride Free Week and receive a free water bottle donated by Guy’s Bicycle Shop or Herb Philipson’s Store.
