Rogers Center Animals of Halloween Program Cancelled

(Sherburne, NY – Oct. 12, 2012) This year’s Animals of Halloween program, a well-attended event at Rogers Environmental Education Center for over 15 years, is cancelled.

The board of directors of Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., the not-for-profit organization that took over the operation of the center after the Department of Environmental Conservation closed it down in December 2010, made the decision after much deliberation.   A lack of funding and staffing constraints drove the decision.

Although the board has managed to keep the center open and has offered programs to the public, running the center is not business-as-usual as when it was funded by the state.  More time will currently be devoted by the board to assessing the current status of the organization, setting priorities, and developing a strategic plan to move the organization forward.

The board hopes to bring the Animals of Halloween program back in the future after dedicating more time to organizational development in an effort to keep the center open for years to come.

FOR needs increased support from the community, both financially and with the help of volunteers, to keep the center open.  This involvement is a key component to keeping special events, including the Winter Living Celebration, along with regular environmental education programming going.
