(Oneida, NY – Nov. 2012) The Oneida City Police have partnered with the CNY Toys for Tots program in an effort to help provide local needy children with toys for this holiday season.

The program is overseen by the U.S. Marine Corps. “Every child deserves a little Christmas” has been the philosophy of the U, S. Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots Program since its inception in 1947. Since then the Marine Corps has served thousands of children with toys each Holiday Season.

The Central New York Toys for Tots program consists of several local Marine Corps League Detachments working in concert with the Marine Corps Reserves to continue to fulfill the Marine Corps’ mission of providing toys for needy children in our local area. Toys for Tots is the only official toy program of the U.S. Marine Corps that is sanctioned by the Department of Defense.

The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation sees that local toy donations are matched by the foundation. This increases the numbers of available toys available for distribution in the Central New York Area. The foundation does this through a campaign of national corporate sponsorships by companies such as Toys-R-Us, Coco Cola, Hasbro, Dollar General and numerous other national and regional sponsors. This enables local donations to go much farther in serving needy children.

In past years, Toys for Tots has put a smile on the face of thousands of children thanks to the combined efforts of Marine Corps League detachments in the Camden, Rome, Herkimer, and Chittenango areas, along with VFW, American Legions and other local service agencies. This is a massive logistics effort the Marines organize similar to any military operation, but this operation is for children.

In the Oneida area, donors and potential sponsors can bring their donations to the lobby of the Oneida City Police Department, located at 108 Main St, Oneida. There will be a drop box left in the lobby for people who wish to donate a new, unwrapped toy for a child this holiday season. Donations will be accepted through Friday Dec. 7.

Other Toy drop off boxes will be located throughout Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, and Lewis Counties. Toy distribution will take place after Dec. 14.
