(Deerfield, NY – Feb. 19, 2013) State Police in Remsen are investigating an accident that occurred shortly before 10 a.m. Feb. 19 on State Route 8 at the intersection of North Gage Road in the Town of Deerfield, Oneida County.

A horse drawn wagon being operated by 12 year-old, Jonathan U. Byler and Isaac U. Byler, age 10, from Poland was traveling Southbound on the west shoulder of State Route 8 in the Town of Deerfield attempting to make a left turn onto N. Gage Road when it turned into the path of a 2010 Kenway Semi Tractor Trailer, which was also traveling southbound, being operated by John R. Silvernail, age 50, from Fort Plain.

The tractor trailer struck the horse and the wagon became airborne, overturned, and came to rest in the northbound lane.  The horse was dispatched at the scene by the owner.

Barrett H. Sheppard, age 12, who was a passenger in the wagon was transported by Kuyahoora Ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and later transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for treatment of a Skull Fracture and Brain Hemorrhaging, reported to be non-life threatening.  Silvernail was not injured.

State Police were assisted on the scene by Kuyahoora Ambulance, Poland Fire Department, and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department.
