(Hamilton, NY – April 2013) Colgate Professor of Philosophy David McCabe kicks off the Lifelong Learning Program’s April/May classes with a course entitled Medical Ethics. Is it okay to use embryos for medical research? When is a person considered truly dead? Should doctors help terminally ill patients to end their lives? This course will explore some of these questions and the philosophical issues they raise. Classes will meet on April 4, 11 and 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Colgate Bookstore.
Next, Drs. Dick Cheshire of Colgate, and John Morris, President Emeritus and Research Professor of Philosophy at Union College, facilitate a conversation entitled: What if the “God Particle” Were True? Recent discovery and tentative corroboration that the Higgs Boson particle (a basic building block of the universe) exists, sparks interesting analysis and questions about the nature of our world and our understanding of religion. This class is sure to encourage lively discussion. The dates and time will be Thursdays, April 25 and May 2 and 9 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Classes will be at the Hamilton Public Library.
Finally in May, LLP takes a look at education in a three- part course entitled: The Future of Public Education: Mandates, Research, and Reform. Kaye Johnston, Professor of Educational Studies at Colgate will look at what constitutes a world class education and what reforms are needed (April 22).
Then Mark Stern, Assistant Professor of Education Studies at Colgate, will discuss testing, teachers, unions, charter schools, and programs like Teach for America (April 29).
To wrap up, Diana Bowers, Superintendent of Hamilton Public schools will look at the way Hamilton Central School combines theory and practice to meet the needs of its students (May 6). These classes will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Public Library.
