DeMarco, Palamino to Attend Boxing Festivities

(Canastota, NY – April 2013Tony DeMarcoPalomino) The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced 1950s welterweight champion Tony DeMarco and Hall of Fame welterweight champion Carlos Palomino will return to Canastota for festivities planned for the 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set fo rJune 6 to 9.

“During the 1950s, Tony DeMarco provided boxing fans with many memorable moments that are still talked about today,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “We are very excited about welcoming him back to Canastota for the big weekend.”

The fighting pride of Boston,  DeMarco was born Jan. 14, 1932. He turned pro in 1948 and captured the world welterweight title from Johnny Saxton in 1955. During his career, DeMarco fought eight world champions and registered wins over Paddy DeMarco, Wallace “Bud” Smith, Kid Gavilan and Don Jordan among others. He also defeated top contenders Chico Vejar and Gaspar Ortega. DeMarco retired in 1962 with a professional record of 58-12-1 (33 KOs).

DeMarco will be one of the featured stars at the Night of Welterweight Warriors on Friday, June 7.

“Carlos Palomino was a key player in the talent rich welterweight division of the 1970s,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “We’re thrilled that he will return to ‘Boxing’s Hometown’ to participate in Hall of Fame Weekend events.”

Born in Mexico and raised in California, Palomino was All-Army welterweight champion in 1971 and 1972 before turning pro in 1972. He won the WBC welterweight title from John H. Stracey (TKO 12) in 1976. He reigned until 1979, successfully defending the crown seven times. Managed by Jackie McCoy, Palomino compiled a 31-4-3 (19 KOs) record that includes wins over Armando Muniz and Dave “Boy” Green. In retirement, Palomino, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, has found success as an actor, appearing in many movies, television shows and plays. He is currently filming the independent film Callejero in Mexico.

Palomino will be one of the featured stars at the Night of Welterweight Warriors on Friday, June 7.

“It is always exciting to come back to Canastota, especially for the welterweight night this year. That’s special for me. It’s always nice to see old welterweight friends and also to see the young welterweights,” said Palomino.
