(Oneida County, NY – April 19, 2013) Spring is here and it’s that time of year when you will see farmers on the road with Slow Moving Vehicle emblems on the back of their farm equipment.
The slow moving vehicle sign is the reflective triangular orange and red emblem designed for Farm Machinery and other implements and machinery that operate at 25 mph or less on a public highway during the day or night. It can also be used by animal drawn vehicles, which are required to use the Slow Moving Vehicle Sign OR a lighted lantern with a red lens mounted on the left edge of the vehicle and at least 72 square inches of a high quality white or whitish gray reflective tape.
Please be respectful of the agricultural vehicles that you may encounter on the highway. Never pass these vehicles on the right side and obey all normal traffic rules just as they should. It is against the law to pass a vehicle with a slow moving vehicle sign in a no passing zone and please be cautious of this equipment making left turns.
Also, be aware that using the triangular slow moving vehicle sign as your driveway or mailbox marker is illegal. Please use reflective signage designed specifically for your mailboxes and driveways. The Oneida County 4-H youth program is committed to educating our community about the proper use of Slow Moving Vehicle Signs. Please help keep our community safe.
If you have questions about the proper use of Slow Moving Vehicles Signs please contact Sgt. Bernie Kennett, State Police Traffic Section at 366-6036 or the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office at 765-2200.
