Oz-Stravaganza News

(Chittenango, NY – May 2013) Oz-Stravaganza officials  announced last week that the annual Emerald City Idol singing competition is getting more recognition and more prominent guest judges.

The sixth annual Emerald City Idol singing competition finals will take place May 18 at Chittenango High School. The competition has recently garnered some national attention when producers from the hit TV show “The Voice” contacted show producer Marc Baum about some prior-year contestants.

“It is very exciting,” Baum said. “We have really gained some recognition in a short period of time with the talent we have in Central New York.  Contestants from our local competition have gone on to bigger stages, performing with professional theater actors, recording artists and a host of other venues and even auditioning for shows like X-Factor and The Voice.

“It is that level of talent that allowed us to expand our celebrity judges this year to include recording artist Mark Zane, radio personality Linda Wimmer and Broadway Composer Steve Margoshes [‘Fame’].”

The May 18 event costs $4 to attend and is open to the public. Local singers interested in participating may audition Thursday, May 9, at the Central New York Playhouse between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. at ShoppingTown Mall or at Chittenango High School Saturday, May 11, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Contestants should have one complete song ready to sing without music. They will sing the same song WITH music at the live finals May 18. The winners May 18 will have the opportunity to perform at Oz-Stravaganza the weekend of May 31 through June 2.

There is never any cost to participate as a contestant.

Cash prizes are awarded to the top three winners in each of four age categories ranging from 6 years old to adult.

The Oz-Stravaganza festival is an all-volunteer-run community event sponsored by the village of Chittenango, the Greater Sullivan Area Chamber of Commerce and the All Things Oz Museum.
