Madison Historical Society news

(Madison, NY – May 2013) The Madison Historical Society presents “Exploring the Chenango Canal” by Wade Lallier as part of the society’s Monthly Speaker Program. This captivating PowerPoint presentation is at the historical society’s building (the old American Legion) on South Street, Madison, May 20, at 7 p.m. It follows the organization’s meeting at 6:30 p.m., which is open to the public.

Lallier is on the board for the Clinton Historical Society and is following his interest by writing a book about the Chenango Canal. He is currently providing additional photos and documents to the Chenango Canal Association to add to its artifacts in the Canal Cottage Museum.

His research includes photos and interesting stories about how the canal started with the legislation and construction; how it functioned (all the structures that were built, reservoirs, feeders, etc.) and how it ended – why the state of New York closed it down in 1878.

The public is invited to attend and enjoy refreshments and visit with the speaker following the presentation.
