(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 2013) Colgate University’s Clifford Art Gallery and the Department of Art and Art History will host an exhibition titled “Pattern Play” Oct. 23 through Jan. 29, 2014.
The showing, which is free and open to the public, will feature a lecture by the artist on Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. in Golden Auditorium of Colgate’s Little Hall.
This is the seventh exhibition in Creighton Michael’s Dimensional Drawing Project, which began nine years ago at the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica.
For this exhibition, PATTERN PLAY: exploring process and collaboration through drawing, Michael will collaborate with Colgate students to create a site-specific installation intended to expand definitions of drawing and to understand drawing’s relationship to other marking systems such as musical notation, calligraphy and choreography.
At the close of the exhibition in January, a musical composition inspired by the works will be performed in the Clifford Gallery.
Michael will also premiere his new video installation, Shadows-Speak, which appears as a subtle play of light and shadow dancing to the taps of a typewriter’s keys. The artist reveals that the shadows are of someone signing repeating the question, Can you understand what I am saying while the typewriter is spelling repeatedly, Can you see what I am saying?
Creighton Michael has had solo exhibitions at the High Museum of Art, Katonah Museum of Art, Vanderbilt University, the Queens Museum of Art at Bulova Corporate Center, Neuberger Museum of Art, University of Richmond Museums and The Mint Museums, as well as numerous galleries and art centers in New York City and throughout the United States.
Abroad he has had solo exhibitions in Copenhagen, Montreal and Reykjavík.
Michael is a recipient of a Pollack Krasner Foundation grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in sculpture and a Golden Foundation for the Arts award in painting. His work is in various public and private collections including the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, High Museum, Mint Museums of Art, Denver Museum and the McNay Art Museum.
