(July 2014) The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE), the nation’s premiere youth think tank based at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service, released a new, interactive online map showing New York’s 23rd Congressional District race is one that should be watched because of young people’s potential role in November’s upcoming election for that seat.
According to CIRCLE, the 23rd Congressional District race is one of four U.S. House elections this year in which youth turnout should be watched most closely, because of the competitiveness of the race, the size of the youth population, and/or the historical youth turnout trend. The others include the Arizona’s 1st, Arizona’s 9th and the Iowa 3rd Congressional District elections.
The dynamic new map released by CIRCLE provides an in-depth view of young voters searchable by every congressional district in the nation, including New York’s 23rd Congressional District.

Representative Tom Reed is defending his seat in a district with roughly a quarter of the population between 18 and 30, and a large number of college campuses. In the two House elections he has won, he has done so by less than 5 percent of the vote.
The online map allows viewers to look into the youth make-up of the New York’s 23rd Congressional District in a number of additional ways, including:
Socio-economic factors including unemployment and educational attainment, demographic information and the number of higher education institutions located in each area;
And the political and social make-up of each congressional district, providing viewers with information relating to potential ballot measures, competitiveness rankings
“Youth voters continue to play a pivotal role in our country’s elections,” said Peter Levine, director of CIRCLE. “As we enter the 2014 midterm election season, it’s important to give the public and the media a place to find some of the most up-to-date, comprehensive data on young Americans provided in an easily searchable format. In New York’s 23rd Congressional District, and in many other congressional elections across the country, youth voters have the ability to make a decisive impact on the result.”
CIRCLE’s online “2014 Election Center” houses analysis and findings most relevant to the midterm elections, including an additional interactive map released by CIRCLE in May that illustrates the most detailed analysis of the youth vote, broken down by state, comparing every national election since 1982.
