(Cazenovia, NY – Aug. 2014) The Art Park will celebrate new additions to the permanent outdoor collection, with a reception and gallery exhibit highlighting Nelson’s smaller bronze and stone sculptures in the Winner Gallery.

A wine and cheese Opening Reception will take place Sunday Aug. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Miriam “Mimi” Nelson, PhD, is a largely self-taught sculptor. As a psychotherapist and professor who always wanted to sculpt, she found that in her early years she didn’t have the money for lessons; in later years, there was no time.

Nelson led a busy life, but the urge to sculpt could not be quelled. After joining classes at the Museum of Art in Coral Gables and sculpting in stone in the early 80s, she found herself years later exhibiting in galleries in and around Miami.

Many years later, Nelson moved to the Northeast. Known to many as the “Grandma Moses of Metal,” numerous magazines and newspapers have featured articles about Dr. Nelson and her work. Her works range from monumental-size steel sculpture, to smaller bronze and stone table-top pieces.

Looking toward the future, Nelson sought a permanent home for some of her larger sculptures. She contacted Stone Quarry Hill Art Park.  After visiting the Art Park, she found it much to her liking and generously offered to contribute some of her works for permanent installation at the Art Park.  A delegation from the Art Park visited Nelson’s home on the shores of Lake Mauweehoo, Conn. and was extremely impressed with her work. The Art Park selected eight of her outdoor sculptures and arranged for their transportation and restoration.
