car-seat(Hamilton, NY – June 2015) Parents, grandparents, and other caregivers often have questions about when their child is ready for the next stage when it comes to riding in the car. For instance, when can the child turn from rear-facing to forward-facing, move into a booster seat, wear just the seat belt without a booster seat, and to what age is it recommended for the child to ride in the back seat? And because they want their children to be safe, parents and caregivers often turn to a nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician or Instructor for help at a child car seat check.

The Madison County Health Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up with the New York State Police to hold a car seat check in Hamilton on Wednesday, June 24from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.at the Big Lots parking lot located at 102 Utica St. The rain date is July 1 at the same time.

To ensure that your child’s car seat is safe and installed correctly, be sure to stop by. Trained staff will make sure the seat is right for your child, check the seat for safety, and ensure that the child and seat are properly buckled in the vehicle. Staff will teach you what you need to know to help your child ride safely.

While seats may be checked without the child present, bring the child with you if possible, so that staff can show you how the child should properly fit in the car seat. Please also make sure that you have installed the car seat in your vehicle, so that staff can check for any errors and teach you how to make any corrections. No appointment is necessary.

This free event is open to the public, and is made possible with funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Call the Madison County Health Department at 366-2361for more information. The event flyer is available in the calendar section of www.healthymadisoncounty.org.
