(Onondaga County, NY – Sept. 2015) With fall now upon us, there are countless ways to make the most of it here in Central New York. One of the best ways to enjoy autumn is by visiting one of our many local farms, where you can buy local produce straight from our farmers, go on a hayride, or go apple picking.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Springside Farm in the town of Pompey and Fresh Herbs of Fabius, to speak with local farmers, learn about their production and tour their grounds. Many of these agricultural businesses not only sell produce directly to consumers, but also provide specialty and homemade products, including baked goods, syrup, and cider. Some also offer visitors a chance to enjoy pumpkin picking, corn mazes and even petting zoos that can provide you with a fun-filled day for the whole family, all while helping to support our local economy.

Visiting local farms is an easy and fun way to learn about our state’s rich agricultural history and the continued importance of local food production. Agricultural activity contributes billions of dollars to our state’s economy every year.

Today, New York State leads the nation in yogurt production and is one of the top 10 states for products such as wine, maple syrup, apples and milk. In Onondaga County alone, there are nearly 700 farms that span over 150,000 acres, producing everything from fruits and vegetables to dairy products and Christmas trees.

Visiting these small businesses and buying the local products means you can support Central New York growers while ensuring you and your family get fresh, healthy food and top-quality products.
