(SSIRP) announced this week that Chobanihas committed a $25,000 matching grant toward the restoration of the historic Sherburne Inn. This grant follows the same grant commitment – a $25,000 matching grant – from NBT in July.

“When NBT announced their grant award to The Inn, we were hopeful that other companies would step forward with contributions as well. We’re delighted that Chobani, an internationally-respected company with its manufacturing plant just nine miles to our east, was the next local corporation to get behind the project,” SSIRP President Kathleen Yasas said.

“Giving back to the communities in which we live and work is one of Chobani’s founding values,” said Jeff Genung, senior manager of corporate communications at Chobani. “Save the Sherburne Inn Restoration Project represents the perfect opportunity to support an effort that aligns with our core beliefs – a grassroots movement to restore purpose to something others once thought had outlived its usefulness. Much like our first factory in South Edmeston, The Sherburne Inn has been rescued from the wrecking ball and will soon be alive again with activity and vitality. Chobani is proud to help usher in a second lease on life for this important and historic part of the Sherburne community.”

Exterior work on the building began on July 13 under the supervision of preservation architect Randy Crawford of Crawford & Stearns, and Rich & Gardner, the general contractor hired by SSIRP for Phase 1 work. Phase 1 includesbrick pointing and general masonry, window restoration, porch deck and porch roof work, trim painting, and column restoration.

“We look forward to other area businesses putting their ‘footprint’ on the project with matching donations,” Yasas said. “We’re working hard to make our 2014 state grant match, and the grants from NBT and Chobani will contribute greatly to that effort.”
