cross-church1-150x150The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia will offer a celebration service of Easter at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 27. Easter is the most joyful time of the church year. Celebrated against the background of the shadows and darkness of Lent and Holy Week, this season truly becomes a living expression of the hope that God has brought into the world through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Probably the most traditional way of celebrating Easter is through special music and song. At The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, Music Director Vince Guareiri has planned a special program of music.

The organ prelude will be “Fanfare and Variations on ‘Now The Green Balde Riseth’” by Raymond H. Haan. The Senior Choir Anthem will be “Be Joyful Together” by J. S. Bach. The organ postlude will be “Gigue Fugue” by J.S. Bach. Trumpet players, Kevin Johnson and Derek White will not only play with the organ on the prelude and accompany with choir’s anthem but will also give accompaniment to the hymns: “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”; “The Strife Is O’er” and “Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna!”Johnson has worked in the Cazenovia School District for 13 years. He conducts the

Johnson has worked in the Cazenovia School District for 13 years. He conducts the 5th grade band, 6th grade band, 9-12 grade Concert Band, 9-12 grade Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, Pep Band and Marching Band. In addition, he teaches 5-12 grade lessons.

Johnson started working at Cazenovia right after he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Johnson also went to the Crane School for his Master’s Degree in Music Education. In addition to his work in Cazenovia, Johnson is also an adjudicator of soloists and ensembles throughout the state. Derek White is a senior who will be graduating and plans to attend Clarkson University where he will play Lacrosse and major in Logistics. He has played trumpet at Cazenovia for 8 years as a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra and Pep/Marching Band. He is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society at Cazenovia and also plays Varsity Lacrosse and Soccer.

The center of the service will be the message by Reverend George VanArnam. VanArnam’s message “Something There Is That Doesn’t Love A Wall.” is from the poem Mending Wall by Robert Frost. He will consider how resurrection undermines the walls that we build between nations, races, urban-suburban, men-women, old-young, and even within ourselves. Reverend VanArnam is the former Director of the Samaritan Counseling Center in Utica. He and his wife, Peggy are long-time residents of Cazenovia.George and Peggy have sold their house and will be moving to North Carolina in April. So this will probably be Reverend VanArnam’s last sermon preached in Cazenovia. The Cazenovia community wishes George and Peggy a wonderful new chapter in their lives as they move to be near their children. We will miss both of them.
