…a celebration of the resurrection with trumpets, anthems and good news

The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia will offer a celebration service of Easter at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 16. Easter is the most joyful time of the church year. Celebrated against the background of the shadows and darkness of Lent and Holy Week, this season truly becomes a living expression of the hope that God has brought into the world through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Probably the most traditional way of celebrating Easter is through special music and song. At The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, Music Director Vince Guarneiri has planned a special program of music. The organ prelude will be Christ Lag in Todesbanden by J.S.Bach. The choir anthem will be Alleluia Christ Is Risen by Beethoven/Hopson. The postlude will be Finale from Organ Symphony No.2 by Charles Marie Widor.

Trumpet players, Kevin Johnson and Nick Barna will not only play with the organ on the prelude and accompany the choir’s anthem but will also give accompaniment to the congregation’s hymns: “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”; “The Strife Is O’er” and “Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna!”

Johnson has worked in the Cazenovia School District for 15 years. He conducts the 9-12 grade concert band, 9-12 grade wind ensemble, pit orchestra, pep band and marching band. In addition, he teaches 5-12 grade lessons. Johnson started working at Cazenovia right after he completed his bachelor’s degree in music education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Johnson also went to the Crane School for his master’s degree in music education. In addition to his work in Cazenovia,

Johnson is also an adjudicator of soloists and ensembles throughout the state. Nick Barna is a junior at Cazenovia High school. He has been playing trumpet for 6 years and sits first chair in the Cazenovia High School wind ensemble. Nick also plays lead trumpet in the jazz ensemble and pit orchestra and dabbles at the piano. Besides music, Nick is a cross-country athlete in the fall and tennis player in the spring. He also is a member of mock trial.

The center of the service will be the sermon “Hanging Onto Easter” by Pastor Tom Oak. The message is based on John 20:1 -18.

If you are looking for an open and friendly place to celebrate Easter, Pastor Oak invites you to worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia. Child Care will be available during the service. For more information contact the church at 655-3191 or visit the website at www.cazpres.org.
