On Saturday May 6th at 1:00 pm the Oneida County History Center will host a special presentation by Emily Zaengle entitled “Silos Nearby.” Zaengle, Executive Director of the Stone Hill Quarry Art Park, will present her research documenting 160 silos along Route 8 from Utica to Brookfield. She will discuss the cultural and aesthetic history of silos and how they’ve become an indicator of a changing agricultural landscape. There is no charge for this event. On Sunday May 7th at 1:00 pm the Oneida Community Mansion House by historian Jason Newton on Theodore Roosevelt’s early adult experiences. Newton will examine how Roosevelt’s experiences in Maine and at Harvard impacted the urban elites concept of self-made manhood was displaced by a romanticized view of the rural working class male body. On Saturday May 13th from 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica will be hosting a Ghost Hunter University. Hosted by psychic mediums Chris Moon and Mamma Moon the night will feature a lecture on ghost hunting as well as a investigation of the mansion. On Monday May 15th from 7:00 am to 8:30 pm the Clay Historical Association and the Liverpool Public Library are sponsoring a special presentation by Joyce Mills on the Historic Resorts that were located on the West Shor of Onondaga Lake at the Soule Road Middle School. Joyce will utilize historic photos and documents to tell the stories of some of the most prominent resorts and inns that were on the lake in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On Saturday May 20th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm the Chittenango landing Canal Boat Museum will host a special workshop by David Salvetti entitled “Introduction to Woodworking.” Salvetti, of the Adirondack Folk School will examine basics of working wood with a focus on hand tool techniques. Topics will include understanding solid wood itself, planning a project, what tools to start with, how to sharpen quickly and introductory techniques. After taking this class students will be ready to start building simple to moderate level woodworking projects. All tools and materials necessary for the class will be provided. Union Bound tells the story of Joseph Hoover, a soldier in the 121st Herkimer, and a fellow soldier as they escape from Florence Confederate Prison on September 21st, 1864 and make their way back to the Union lines 33 days later – with the help of slaves who were also running north. Pat Ennis, a descendant of Joseph Hoover, will tell the story of how her transcriptions of the diaries led to the making Union Bound. Carroll will speak about how members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP New York) and the Women’s Health Action Mobilization (WHAM!) joined together to fight for rights to sexual autonomy and universal health care. Clark received a Bronze Star for his service in Korea and will talk about experiences including photos from his time overseas.
