Oneida-based state police charged a Utica man with DWI after stopping him for speeding in Verona early Saturday morning.

At approximately 2:20 a.m. May 13, Troopers Mackenzie Werenczak and Andrew Lipuma observed a 2010 Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on State Route 365 in Verona at 86 mph in a 55-mph zone.

The troopers stopped the vehicle and interviewed the driver Alfred E. Wehrle, 46, of Sun Lit Terrace, Utica. While speaking with Wehrle, the troopers noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

Sobriety tests indicated he was intoxicated and Wehrle was taken into custody for DWI. He was processed at the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined Wehrle’s blood alcohol content to .17 percent.

Wehrle was ticketed for DWI, Driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater and speeding and is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court May 23, 2017.
