Millions Of American Citizens Who Live In Puerto Rico Still Have No Power, Food, Or Clean Water
Gillibrand, A Member Of The Senate Agriculture Committee, Led Colleagues In Calling For Immediate Approval Of Food Aid For Fellow American Citizens In Puerto Rico
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today sent a letter urging the United States Department of Agriculture to immediately approve emergency food aid for the millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico who have no power, food, or clean water in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Gillibrand’s letter was also signed by Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Christopher Murphy (D-CT), Cory A. Booker (D-NJ), Richard J. Durbin (D-IL), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).
“Our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico are suffering through a humanitarian crisis, and we need to help them now,” said Senator Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. “Many of them have no food to eat and no water to drink, and if we don’t quickly get them the supplies and food they desperately need to survive, many more people could die – far more than were killed by the hurricane itself. The President and the Department of Agriculture must act immediately, with the same urgency they showed for Texas and Florida, to send food aid to Puerto Rico, and to make sure it is distributed safely and efficiently. I will continue to fight in the Senate to make sure our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico have every resource they need to recover from this catastrophic storm, and I urge all of my colleagues to take this crisis seriously and fight with me.”
