Tenney Introduces No Work, No Pay Act Of 2018

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) introduced Jan. 19 the No Work, No Pay Act of 2018.  This bill would require Congress to work full time with no salary during any government shutdown until they pass a bill to fund the government. The bill is cosponsored by Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-1), Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (IN-9) and Rep. Ted Budd (NC-13).

“Washington politicians have made it the new norm to hold taxpayers hostage and use government shutdowns as a political weapon,” Tenney said. “Senator [Chuck] Schumer and Washington liberals are intent on putting an open border and illegal immigrants before helping American citizens. The initiatives in the continuing resolution have been supported by Democrats for years. This unnecessary shutdown being forced by Democrats today will hurt seniors, children, flood victims and military families, to advance their left-wing agenda,” said Tenney. “If Congress fails to do its job they too should forfeit their compensation. The American people sent us to Washington to solve problems, not create them. This is not time to hurt the people who elected us to serve them.”

“If Congress can’t do its job, we don’t deserve to get paid. In the real world, if I can’t complete the job that’s given to me I would not get paid. It is unreasonable to expect anything different for Members of Congress,” said Bergman.

Tenney’s bill would require members of Congress to forfeit their pay each day the government remains shut down. Tenney voted for the continuing resolution to fund military families, children’s health insurance, seniors and flood victims.
