Tax Help for Seniors

Monday9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

IRS certified volunteers under the auspices of Cornell Co-operative Extension will provide free tax help and electronic filing to seniors on a first-come, first-served basis. Seniors should bring all their pertinent tax documents and last year’s return with them. Tax Help at the OPL continues Monday and Wednesday mornings through April 16.

Ready To Read: Music and Motion

Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.

Newborns to 4 year-olds and their parents or guardians will enjoy songs, rhymes, coordinated movements and just plain fun, all of which will help stimulate the children’s language skills.

Oneida Library Election

Registered voters in Oneida Public Library’s Special District are eligible to vote for candidates for the three open seats on the OPL Board of Trustees and vote on the board’s proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2018-19. Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Teens can turn their cell phones into microscopes with the help of the techno-wizard, Peter Gillander, known in everyday life as an Oneida High School technology teacher.

Kids’ Book Club

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Beginning March 7 and continuing weekly at the same time, young people in second– through fifth-grades can come to the OPL to discuss books with Megan Gillander and play games. For March the selection is Kate DiCamillo’s “Because of Winn Dixie.” Parents can sign their children up at the OPL Desk and order copies of the book.

Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

In preparation for St. Patrick’s Day, OPL Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander invites children and parents to a party of Irish songs, stories, games and crafts.

For Teens: Foundations in Personal Finance, Session 3

Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Registered ninth through twelfth graders continue finance expert Dave Ramsey’s mini-course on budgeting, savings, careers and taxes through videos and free personal student workbooks.

Monday at 1:00 p.m.

On the second and fourth Monday afternoons this month, enjoy watching the latest release of a five-star film on DVD, while sipping tea or coffee and tasting some light confections. For March 12, the 2017 British film “Goodbye, Christopher Robin” dramatically presents the story of A. A. Milne, author of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, and his family. It features Domhill Gleeson, Margot Robbie and Kelly MacDonald.

Book Talk: Norm Dann on Peter Smith

Thursday at 2:00 p.m.

Historian Dr. Norman Dann will present his new biography entitled Peter Smith of Peterboro: Furs, Land, and Anguish. Peter, father of Gerrit Smith, created the family’s fabulous wealth through fur trading and land speculation, but ended up an eccentric, disturbed old man. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.

Prof. Jen Herzog, a biology instructor at Herkimer County Community College, conducts a discussion for adults on John S. Marr’s novel “The Eleventh Plague.” She will also explore the human microbiome and the potential for bioterrorism. Copies of the book are available to pre-registrants.

Amadan: Songs of Drinking and Blackguarding

Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The band Amadan (Irish for “Fool’s Errand”) welcomes spring at the OPL with lively Irish songs and music for get-togethers. Featured are Mike Carroll on flute and bones, Bill Fahy on guitar and banjo and Mike Hoke on fiddle. Concert is free.
