OPL’s Monday Movie Matinee March 12 features ‘Goodbye, Christopher Robin’

Oneida Public Library will be showing recently released movies just out in DVD on the second and fourth Monday afternoons of the month from March through June, starting Monday, March 12, at 1 p.m. with “Goodbye, Christopher Robin.”

The film, released in late 2017, tells the story of author A. A. Milne, his self-centered wife Daphne and their son Christopher Robin (called “Billy Moon” in the film) and the genesis of Milne’s classic children’s stories involving the stuffed bear Winnie-the-Pooh and his human friend named “Christopher Robin.” The idyll of father and son in the English countryside in the early 1920s that inspires the books ends abruptly when the first Pooh book is published. It is an immediate popular hit, and both father and son get swept up in promotional events and guest appearances. The price of fame is their estrangement over the years until World War II looms and Christopher Robin goes to war.

“Goodbye, Christopher Robin,” directed by Simon Curtis, is a film of lush colors with splendid 1920s-vintage costumes and sets and an English countryside that bears an uncanny resemblance to E. H. Shephard’s illustrations in the Pooh books. Featured actors are Domhnall Gleeson (Milne), Margot Robbie (Daphne), Will Tiltson (young Christopher Robin) and Kelly Macdonald (the nanny Olive).

To make for a convivial gathering, the OPL will also be offering the audience tea, coffee and some suitable light confections.

The next movie matinee at the OPL will be Monday, March 26, at 1 p.m., and features “Victoria and Abdul,” a Stephen Frears film starring Judi Dench as Queen Victoria and Ali Fazal as the Indian Moslem servant Abdul who became the queen’s last favorite.

All Monday Movie Matinee shows at the OPL are free and open to the public. For more information, stop by the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., or call (315) 363-3050.
